Capacity expansion planning is a strategic process used in the power industry to ensure that there is sufficient generation and transmission capacity to meet future electricity demand years, often 10+ years out. This involves determining the optimal mix of power generation resources as well as the infrastructure to support these resources.  This is an extra-ordinarily complex process that takes into account highly uncertain variables such as forecasting future demand across geographic regions, availability and cost of resources (i.e. fuel), policy and regulation, energy security, and more.  Quantum algorithms may help to improve optimization of this challenging process undertaken by utilities to support safe, reliable, clean, and abundant energy.
