The development of new, better batteries is a critical component of the transition towards a more sustainable future. Innovation in this field, though, has been hampered by the fact that existing techniques are unable to model relevant materials – where coherent quantum effects play a significant role – accurately. The potential for quantum computing to transform this industry was recognised by Johnson Matthey and Phasecraft, who have undertaken a joint R&D project (together with University College London) to investigate this problem. The work has produced an end-to-end quantum software tool able to efficiently and accurately simulate key properties of materials of relevance for battery development.
